VIA KT266 or AMD 761?

Hi, Im looking to build a new system and am trying to decide between the via kt266 chipset or the amd 761. Can anyone tell me what would be the best for gaming peformance? Thanks

AMD 761 is very old, and is discontinued, I believe. I'm sure there are boards that are left over, but I wouldn't take it, the KT266A is a better chipset overall.

I would not say the AMD 761 is very old, there are alot of
quality motherboards using that chipset. If you find a deal
on one you will be satisfied. But chances are you will find
a 266A at a reasonable price as well. I am currently using
the KT266 and I never had any intention of tearing out my
motherboard to replace it with a 266A.

Ok here is another question. I currently have the asus a7v266 with the kt266 chipset. I may be selling this board though. Which board would be better, the asus a7v266 with kt266, the fic an11 with the kt266a, or the msi with kt266a? I really dont want raid because I wouldnt use it and dont know how anyway. Also I dont really want onboard sound. Thanks for the quick responses.

Of the boards you mentioned I'd go with the MSI KT266A especially since you will be using the system for gaming. Asus makes great boards but the KT266 chipset exhibits lackluster performance (lower than the AMD761 chipset).

don't buy the damn kt266 chipset. only look for kt266a. asus makes the best 266a board. after that try msi. also, the amd761 is a good stable chipset, but the 266a is faster and more recent.

Go with the KT266A chipset, I think its a better choice since the AMD 761 chipset is discontinued, we don't know how AMD will keep the support for it in the future, but it's a very good chipset too.
But the KT266A is faster, and I would say it is as stable as the AMD761. And since you want a system for gaming the speeds count a lot.

Good luck on ur pick!

Ok I guess I will either go with the Asus A7V266-e (no raid) or the MSI kt266a. You guys dont think the FIC AN11 with kt266a is a good board?

go asus. you rarely see people complaining about probs with their boards. i don't trust msi 100%. seems like they can have their share of probs like my friends have had. plus, asus has a strong bios

Alright, narrowed down to 3. The MSI KT266a PRO 2, the Asus A7V266-E, or what about the overlooked Abit KR7A? Asus is a bit more expensive, almost $40 more than MSI, but is the performance increase really worth it?

Of those 3 I'd go with the Abit.

As for the original question I'd without a doubt get the AMD761 over the VIA KT266.
You'd have to be nuts to pay for a KT266 mobo now.

No the KR7A is ATA 100, the Abit KR7A-133 is ATA 133, and the KR7A-R is ATA133 on RAID channels only.

You won't notice any real difference between ATA 100 and 133.

So even if I did get the KR7A, it would only be ata133 on raid? Then it sounds like the KR7A is the best choice. Thanks everyone for your input.
