Via chipsets, WinXP, 4-in-1's - I need to know what to use here...

I've seen a few posts floating around regarding Via chipsets, the 4-in-1 drivers, and Windows XP - mostly some saying things like DO NOT INSTALL THE 4-in-1's with WinXP...

Then I've heard others say INSTALL THE 4-in-1's with WinXP...

And finally I've heard others say ONLY INSTALL SUCH AND SUCH OF THE 4-in-1's with WinXP (Like only the AGP driver... or something like that)...

What, exactly, am I supposed to install with a new machine here? I figure Via wants you to install whatever it gives you, especially since there's no disclaimer advising against it.

Help? Thanks.

Mem says you will not have a problem - everything will go perfectly. Who am I to argue with God's gift to Anandtech?

I`ve installed every official VIA 4 in 1 drivers from 4.34 to 4.40 with no problems with WinXP,when you install(go with the normal default install) them it only updates the inf files and AGP driver so not much can go wrong, btw most my friends have WinXP as well and they also update their 4 in 1 drivers with no problems, the bottom line it`s really up to you if you do or don`t.

It`s a really simple procedure , nothing to it,well for most people ;).

Edit: Nope, changed my mind, not gonna give links to 4.40/XP/Win 2K/Win98 probs. Why waste effort for nothing?

Mem's standard answer to this question...........
"Works for all my friends and me" is good enough for AT ;)

Hehehe... thanks guys...

I actually have been using the 4-in-1's installed as a complete package on my KT133a board for the past year or so without problem - of course, you may be asking now "well why did you ask then?".

I just put together a new system for my... ahem... step-mom. KT333 board, WinXP, and all. And I just remember lately seeing all the squabble about what drivers to install. I wanted to know if there was some difinitive answer. I installed the whole 4.40P3 4-in-1, and everything is humming along nicely. Just wanted to know for future reference.

Yep ,my friends and I are test subjects ;),btw the only time I had trouble was installing a WinXP driver update from Microsoft update site for my printer, kind of ironic,so don`t install WinXP driver updates, lots of people have had problems doing so.

Mem says you will not have a problem - everything will go perfectly. Who am I to argue with God's gift to Anandtech?

Hope you`re joking ;),anyway to answer that I would say you should not have any problems but like all computer hardware and software there`s always a small chance so the bottom line is it`s up to you.

I`ll let you know when I`ve my first VIA 4 in 1 driver problem ,I keep installing them but my WinXP eats them for breakfast ;).

Install them and every part of them. I found they played a major part in eliminating my Audigy squeal of death with my KT266A.

They also make the computer slightly faster.
