VIA Chipsets - spontaneous rebooting problems still exist?

As you know, via is suck. At least that was my opinion of the last two boards that used their chipsets. My favorite problem was the popping noise that thousand upon thousands of soundblaster cards - the industry standard - had. Not to mention the buggy USB problems, among them the fact that my DSL USB modem would cause spontaneous rebooting of the PC.

I swore never to buy via again. Ever.

But now I have a problem. Im giving my stable, never spontaneos rebooting CUSL2C board and P3700 to my dad as a gift soon. I want to wait for Northwood but I cant wait that long. So, Im going AMD 761 w/via southbridge and xp1600 til then. Probably the KG7 board.

That damn thing better not have bugs!!

What was this rant all about?!?!?! :frown:
If you dont like via dont buy their products, its that simple
personally i have had no problems on my 3 via boards, NONE, EVER

arg, via is not "suck", that is such an extremely stupid statement that its not even funny

Do you want to start another via fight? And buddy, in case you dont know, the northwoods are out.

KG7 utilizes VIA's ubiquituous 686B South Bridge. It is full of issues, just like all the rest. If only they would have used the AMD south bridge... :)

LOL. Dont be offended! If you knew what I went through for about a year, you would understand. Apparently you dont sympathize with me. Some like chevys, some like fords. Whatever.

I'll assume you mean XP333 and XP333-R. I've only used one, but I've heard mixed blessings.

IMHO, SiS 735 is the only choice for a single processor machine. Otherwise, you can go with all AMD chipsets on the duallies.

Very old issue. Easily solve w/ patch, bios update.

Lies w/ the KT266 chipset if u O/C past 138 FSB. Don't O/C or put a separate USB card on one of those free PCI slot.

The KG7 is an excellent board and if you look around you should see some very good comments on it. Its fast, stable and loaded with all the features you could need. I have one I would definitely recommend it. It's only a few % behind VIAs latest in terms of benchmarking (eg real world you would never notice) and if you don't like VIA and want DDR well then it's perfect.

I agree the KG7 is one heck of a board. I also run a soyo dragon + and it's damn near perfect.

VIA can be good. You just need to make it that way.

Unless you have had direct experience with this board then that is a very uneducated statement! As far as I have seen the hybrid AMD-761/VIA boards have never displayed any of the same problems that the KT133A had, namely the Sound Blaster/file transfer bug.

After my experience with the Epox 7KXA and 8KTA I've decided not going with VIA never again. However I read that other mobos using VIA chipsets had been working OK, and didn't present extrange incopatibilities (like the "Green Line issue") or hanging/reseting. So I decided to avoid Epox. Now I'm thinking in trying the new models, I suposse they must have a better testing procedure now. Anyway, my two last mobos were ASUS, and they were both second hand, ussed boards, they are just way too expensive.
