Via C3s are crap @ SETI!!

Hello all,

Some of you might remember my tread from a while back about a really cheap mobo with integrated everything, including a Via C3 CPU at 1.3Ghz. Well, I bought one. I knew it would be bad at SETI, but not this bad. It's first work unit completed in 1 day, 3 hours, and 22 minutes and had a 1.106 AR! That's on DDR, too

This is under Mandrake Linux, so it might be faster under Windows, but still. To anyone considering one: DON'T BUY! About the only thing this would be good for is low end HTPC or a carputer.

Yep, that's about the gist of it.

The only place they are really useful are small-form factor, low power requirement uses...like in my sig 🙂


On my 1GHz Epia Nemiah with 266MHz DDR, i was getting about 45k cEMs/sec in SoB, whereas on my XP 1800+ running at 1.13GHz with PC100 (the motherboard won't run at 133MHz bus without crashing 🙁) was getting 150k cEMs/sec...3x the peformance from a "15% faster" CPU.

Yah, they are great for Mini-Itx systems but not much else. Pentium M Mini ITX Mini-itx boards are on the way, if they are not already available, and they will rock at seti! Plus, they won't need much for cooling, though they will still use more power than the C3
 
For $5? Even if it's 10 bucks each, you could buy 10 for 100 and get 10 more WU's a day. Who cares if they're slow? THe performance to price ratio is really good. You can get 20 WU's a day in under $200!
 
Buy a duron and a refurb mb with some cheap rebate ram and you'll get 9-10 WU per day for under $100 and you'll have a better general purpose rig.

Plus, you aren't paying the electricity for 10 systems.

I would of thought you'd need to run it on a 200FSB to get those times on a Duron,wouldn't you?

lol,I just remembered I built 2 1.4GHz Duron DDR rigs recently!😱 ,KT266a chipsets.When I wound up the FSB to 150MHz (Duron @1.6GHz) I was getting 3.5hrs/WU ,not bad 🙂 so I guess 2.75hrs isn't so hard to imagine😉.......oh I forgot to mention I tried maxing out one of those Durons & it hit 2.17Ghz!😀
A refurb mbrd would need to be able to alter the multiplier though.

I remember reading a review of the C3 vs PIII ages ago (THG or AT) ,the PIII had a 50% faster FPU!:Q
Oh & a 2nd thing their good at ,low heat output
 
1.6 ghz duron at 2 ghz with MSI K7N2 Delta-L @ 333 fsb. If I can get some better RAM, I may try to really max it out. It is still on stock voltage. I've got a whole $105 invested in the CPU, board and RAM.

Of course for another $9, you could get a Thorughbred 1800+.
 
I have a Mini-ITX Via C3 as one of my 4 rigs. It's good for a quiet, low-power Windows or Linux system. It has a built in MPEG-2 decoder, so it's capable of watching movies. I've even seen DIVX movies on it. People have used it for many purposes (see www.mini-itx.com). However, for SETI or any DC projects, it's pretty dang useless. 🙂

They have their uses, but you have to know what you're getting also. I don't have one yet, but I'm looking for something to jam one in...some of the projects over there are incredible.

Oh my! Hell, a K6-2 500 could actually beat it, lmao! And I thought the K6 had a crap FPU.

Advanced Encryption Standard. It's today's DES. The algorithm is Rijndael, if you are interested. I personally rooted for twofish. 😉

The Nehemiah core of the C3 can beat AMD64 1.6ghz (in 32bit mode) and P3 1ghz. in recent tests. It beat them hardily 😉

I imagine using the chip for VPNs or WAPs would be pretty useful, and those happen to be two of the uses I intend for them 😉

It does make me wonder though, if the on die AES support could some how be used (maybe an instruction here or there) for RC5-72 or ECC2...
