VIA C3 processor...

I don't really see too many of these processors. Why not? They seem to run pretty cool so I'm thinking of looking for a laptop using one of them. What do you guys think?

The money trail leads up the noisy, hot, power-hungry Mhz mountain. A small, cool, quiet, little known Alpine meadow lies at the 500-800 Mhz plateau where the C3 resides. Only a few have have taken a second look at their surroundings and have discovered that 500-800Mhz will do just fine for their computing needs, leaving funds better spent on other joys. Otherwise, the're available at TigerDirect (ugh) and AxionTech (search for "Cyrix"). My 2 C3-800's are doing a great job on my SOHO lan (Abit VH6-II boards), not one single complaint.

oops sorry of that first post i hit enter before i typed anything eh....

crazed i was going to build one of these things with a c3 the thing is i want to build a dual cpu setup...is there a mobo that will let two C3 be use? If not how about dual intel celeron cpus i here ppl talk of them but i have not found any mobos that use dual celerons has always been pIII only eh? any help would be cool...thanks...???

Only dual celerons are the older pre-FC-PGA cpus. One of the motherboards that supports them is Abit BP-6 (I'm still using it w/ a dual 366@583 celeron setup).

Hi!

I love how this C3 discussion turns into a CELERON discussion. 🙂

If your needs do not include FAST MATH software to run on it then youl will be ok with C3.

Cheers,

The reason why you don't see too many of them around in the western world is because they are mostly sold in Asia and the far east. They make a nice profit with them over there. The supply and demand for the western world isn't enough.

I do see a lot of C3 based laptops in Europe, anyone know any C3 based laptop sellers in the USA?

What do you mean by "FAST MATH software"?

Hi!

By "FAST MATH software" I ment soft that uses the FPU part of the CPU intensively (Games/3D softs/CAD...).
That should run pretty bad on C3...

Cheers,

C3 data sheet says that "SMP is not supported, it has no utility in the target system environment". Dunno what that statement exactly means, prolly same statement on Celeron/Duron data sheets. Btw, Q3Arena (demo) plays just super with the C3-800 and GF2 MX. I found no difference in player experience compared a 750 Tbird. Your mileage may differ.

I think the "slow FPU" myth has only to do with their pre-"SSE Enabled" benchmarks. Not a wonder considering their integer/fpu scores are generally sub-par for processors with the same rated speed.

Anand did a second look at the C3 and confirmed it had improved quite alot after it went to market. Once VIA enabled SSE the scores for Quake3 dramatically improved.

MadRat:

Well then the CPU is realy great!
I didn't folow the latest developments of C3. So if you say it got faster, then it is ok with me.

Cheers,

Hi!

SuperCyrix: well it seems to me the despite all the changes that went into latest C3 it still performs much lower then the
Celeron or Duron in all the Games they tested. But for simple Office application it still could be usefull... If they can price it lower than the Duron or Celeron. But that's gona be though.

Cheers,
