I thought there was a warning on some of the VIA drivers that they weren't for everyone (especially WIN2K). Not just that but aren't the 4.29's either alpha or beta?

These 4in1 drivers also locked up my Win2K machine. I reinstalled OS and the Windows default drivers worked much better. My Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 60 had a Sandra score of 19,260 with 4in1s and 24,478 with Win2K default drivers and is hooked up to the secondary controller. The only via driver I installed was the 4.05 AGP driver.

What's the verdict on the 4 in 1 4.29's? Half says good, half says bad. In win2k, is it advisable to install all drivers? I heard from some people on the boards that the IDE Busmaster shouldn't be installed.

GO BRUINS!

VIA is supposedly trying to make the IDE driver in the later 4-in-1's (4.29 beta, 4.29 "final") more compatible with Windows 2000. It's hard to tell if they are succeeding or not, many people are still getting their systems. Personally, I don't think their driver is much more than a run-time patch of some sort, since it consists of a .sys file which is only 5 kilobytes in size.

I only run the drivers that Via have on their own web page. I tried 4.28 under win2k and I couldn't even boot anymore, had to repare the install. Since then, only official releases from Via for me. I don't trust those sites that say they're final. If it was final, Via would have posted them

4.29 Betas work 100% ok for me.... which is good because the IDE busmaster 4.28 totally messed up my system.

Same thing for me... 4.28 caused a hard lock on boot up and I had to reformat. But the 4.29 work fine... I upgraded from 4.25a

I have the 4.29's installed and they work beautifully for me. IDE Busmaster drivers have been rock solid and even provided a small performance boost.

The 4.28's were a nightmare but the 4.29's have been flawless in my experience so far.

4.29Beta KICKS ASS for me.

I've got MSI K7T Turbo Mobo, Win2k and TDK VeloCD 12/10/32

I spit on 4.28 and how it CHOKED my CDRW, but 4.29 not only works...But I'm getting 33.1x DAE max RIP now!

In other words, 4.29 works for me.
