vi setting configuration

for some reason... vi on my solaris machine doesn't take you to command mode... actually it doesn't do anything.

through sheer accident I discovered that 'shift'+'q' takes you to command mode.

is there anyway to correct this problem?

So you are still in interactive mode (or whatever its called) when you hit esc?

this problem wasn't really a problem... I was confused with what the 'esc' key did. i thought pressing it would bring up the ':'
