I have an older P4 3ghz @ 533 fsb AGP system. Currently the system has a POS video card that cant even do google earth. However, because I need to transfer over a few dozzen VHS tapes to DVD, I thought maybie I could go with something like an all in wonder? what do you think is the best bang for buck AGP card to do VHS to DVD recording that might do some older games. (not talking oblivian or Quake 3 here, talking C&C Generals, SW:Empire at War, etc... )

Yea I was kinda thinking AIW was going to be my only option. I'd love something with some bundled software to do the VHS to DVD thing.

Just get a VHS/DVD recorder combo and save yourself the aggravation. You can now get some cheapies for ~ $100, a nice one for about $200.

But I can't edit and combine different tapes with an all in one solution and $200 goes a long way in replacing the $10 vid card in the computer now.

What agp cards would do the vid encoding for dvd archiving. Which come with the software needed? It is mostly a software bundle question.

And NO I'm not going to just use a Mac.

$30 PCI TV card (like KWorld's 7131) plus a retail pack (!) DVD burner that comes with the software you seek (e.g. Samsung's) will solve the VHS-to-DVD problem, and leave you with all the choices regarding graphics OUTPUT performance.

I would sugest something alng the ATI AIW line. I have had a AIW 9700 Pro and I currently own an AIW X800 XT and both have done a great job at capturing. You MUST and this is impotant.... find the right combination of drivers and Multimedia Center (MMC) I have been using a combination of Catalyst 5.10 Drivers and MMC 9.06.1 . If you do not use the right combo of drivers and MMC you will have stability problems.

This guy has a lot of pointers on seting up you MMC so it captures the best.

I would however, also note that a good standalone DVD recorder can do marvels especially if you use a color corrector and/or a TBC (time based corrector)

A good DVD recorder (Pioneer or JVC) can enhance your VHS recordings and clean them up to a certain degree.

You can definitely combine tapes with an all in one recorder, and if you really need to you can edit them any way you want (e.g. re-arrange screnes). Anyway your original post said you needed to transfer tapes to DVD and for that a simple DVD recorder is the best, easiest choice.

update

I went with an LG RC199H VHS DVDrw/dl deck. Of note for future users you can only do good edits on this deck with DVD-+RW's.

Other than that nag it has been working great and is recomended!
