Question VHD to SSD, refuses to boot up

HP EliteBook 8460w hd failed and refused to load win7. luckily the recovery partition is still good with the recovery VHD file intact.
i used Vhd2disk_64bits to restore the VHD file onto an SSD. when i put the SSD back into the laptop, it refuses to boot up. i set boot device order to have the SSD boot up first but that did not help.

As I understand it, a VHD file is not bootable until a VHDX file is created.

You can just make the target disk bootable with easyBCD or the windows CMD BCD commands.
Also using the recovery partition the way it's explained in the manual would give you a working system.
(Clone the whole disk together with the broken parts and just do a normal recover)

i did try making the new drive primary and active but that did not work.

i ended up just calling HP. they sent me a recovery DVD disc. no charges. pretty impressive support considering the laptop is at least 4 years old. during installation, windows did not even ask for key.

Modern OS needs also an BCDstore to tell it where the OS is otherwise it just boots up the disk and stays there,kinda like the boot.ini in XP.
