VH6 not seeing any drives?

I got all fired up building the first homebuilt. VH6, piii 800/133, rage fury pro ,system sartup finds video, ram, cpu all fine.........put in boot disk and get I/O failure. The drive works in my old computer. System also fails to locate any IDE dvices. All function in the other machine. Is is me?
