Specs look good. Price is 'alright' imo when compared what a high end laptop in England costs. The £ to $ thing rapes us 🙁

I think this is the perfect laptop for me. Or until they release a 15.4" widescreen laptop 😀

Basically what I have wanted was a PowerBook that ran Windows 😛 as I have the software and gaming would be easier for me. Well the Sony laptops have always looked good and the specs were fine. The only downfall was the weak graphics card on the ultra portables. But with a 9700 with 64mb that looks like it is fixed here 😀

I'd be tempted to get one but I've already got a Vaio and it has served me solidly for the past 2 years. This also has a built in optical drive which is a DVD-RW which is nice. Mine has no optical but I find I don't end up using it much but would be nice to pop in a dvd for a film when I'm out or so.

Yep, this is a very nice notebook. I hope other manufacturers follow Sony's lead and come out with something similarly small and light with a decent graphics card, rather than the Intel integrated graphics chip that is so common on machines this size.

It's known as the VGN-S170 in the US.

Here's a long thread on Notebook Forums: VAIO Type S

Here are a couple new forums that have started to discuss the S series machines:

Thanks for the links manko. I'm not 'really' interested in a new laptop but they are nice toys 😀

I already have a Sony Vaio from about 2 and a half years ago.

12.1" (1024x768)
PIII 850 (mobile version)
384mb ram
20Gb
11mb onboard graphics 😛
1.69kg = 3.7lbs
3.5hrs battery life.
FireWire and everything else just no optical drive built in.

GREAT machine.

The Sony Vaio's are pricey but if I was going to buy one I'd pay the extra and get it. The PB imo 'were' the ultimate but this one looks like it is just as good. The only benefit is that all my pc stuff will work on it and the graphics card is powerful and not onboard stuff like mine.

Has a built in DVDRW also!
