VGA vs DVI?

I just got my new computer and LCD up and running and I've been using the DVI-VGA adaptor on my computer. My monitor has a HDMI port instead of DVI and comes with a DVI-HDMI cable. I haven't hooked it up though. Things look pretty good with VGA, but I was wondering if there is any difference or advantages of using the DVI hookup? Thanks!

Why not try it and see first hand. At a certain resolution, and depending on your screen size you will begin see where DVI excels over AGP.

Basically VGA=analog DVI=digital, obviously digital is going to be better. If you can use it, there's no point NOT using it.

Honestly, with a 24" LCD, you'll probably see a decent difference when going to DVI. I'd go for it, especially since you can get a HDMI -> DVI for 6 bucks off monoprice.com 🙂

EDIT: Noticed it came with an HDMI to DVI cable(read your whole post 😛): Why come to AT and ask us? Just hook it up and see if you see a difference. Not like it'll take THAT much time.

I often read about and heard that if you want an LCD monitor you better go with a DVI one.

It doesn't really matter when you're talking about bargain price 17-19 inch LCDs, heck some of the really cheap 17/19's only have a VGA cable. DVI really starts to matter once you go above 20", unless you have a good quality 17/19" LCD.

It made a huge difference on my parents HP 19 inch ws. I was kinda surprised. I've always used DVI on my Samsung 206BW but figured the improvement was universal.

May not be a noticeable difference in terms of what you see, but there's a huge difference for an LCD monitor on vga due to having to convert from digital to analog and back to digital again. Double conversions are not a good thing.
