hi,

looking for a 17" or 19" lcd monitor. w/o fail everytime i go to a computer store to check them out they're hooked up using VGA. for those of you using an lcd with DVI input, just how noticeable is the difference? is it "oh...it's a little better" or is it "holly sh@t....this is like night and day!"

thanks,
k

On my monitor, DVI makes images look sharper and the monitor looks better at lower resolutions, but the difference isn't that great.

Made a very big difference on the Dell 1901FP I bought for my GF.

If you see a monitor hooked up to VGA and it looks good to you. Then hooking up to DVI should make it look just as good or better sometimes. It won't look worse hooked up
to the DVI.

It's probably like the difference between a clean SVIDEO signal and YPrPb (component video) - highly subjective. To some people it's very noticeable, to others, it's very minor.

Like most things, I'd try to get a monitor that supports DVI, but if the difference is a huge % in price, I'd stick to a solid LCD with VGA.

Using DVI I would say it`s noticeable and everything is crisper with no ghosting that you get with analogue, when I say ghosting I mean like if you look at the black vertical lines in AT forums that are between threads and forums you don`t get any slight ghost image of the vertical line to the side.

Analogue quality does vary between models and brands from very good to poor, using DVI is definetly recommended where possible for maximum sharpness,IQ quality etc.

Some lcd's it makes much more of a difference...

My:

VX900... much clear, bright picture
191T... much better everything..., but not night & day...
Albraton 17"... without DVI I feel the LCD sucks... DVI gives a great picture...

I have used each on a FX5950 & R9800XT...

In the end, I would never buy a LCD without DVI, games play better, with less to no ghosting using DVI, text in everyday work looks much better...

Big difference with my VP171b, but I've heard others say it didn't make a difference for them. I think a big factor is the quality of the VGA cable being used, yes it makes a difference.

completely depends on the vid card.

some vid cards analog seems as good as dvi. almost. right now i'm running dvi, since the card i had before looked terrible in analog.

i had been using a kvm, and an old gf2mx, and it looked horrid. too many cables and extensions. with dvi now, at least you can be sure you wont get any signal interferance, and its as good as its going to get.
