I have a laptop that I want to take up with me to college and use as a sort of Media center (I'm currently in the process of encoding all of my DVD's from home). The laptop only has a VGA port and no S-Vid connections (acer travelmate 2300, Intel 855GM chipset.) So I was looking for a transcoder that I could pair up with the laptop so I can watch my movies.

Considering that I don't know what TV I will be dealing with (I was going to leach off of others or the TV that might be provided by the apartment). I was looking for recommendations of transcoders.

Here is what I have found

ENCORE ENXTV VGA Interface New External TV Box (not sure if it converts from VGA to Component, but it has a tv-out port and a VGA in, so I would hope it does)

KWORLD KW-PCTV-1600 VGA Interface PC to TV Converter (Looks OK, but has a low review rating, still might get the job done.)

PC to TV-Econo Converter from svideo.com, resellerrating where pretty good so I might bite for this one.

Annnnd, That is about it, I have found another from an unknown website (looked a bit doggy) for like $40 but I would prefer to stick with newegg or even a site that you guys trust. (I think the site was like Svideo.com if I remember correctly)

Whatever I get, I will probibly pair with this and this, so I should be alright for about any TV that I come across (most will probably be dilapidated)

Since I got my first HDTV a few years ago I have been using monoprice.com for all my cabling needs, no fancy brand names but they work just as well as what you can find in stores for a fraction of the price. As for what you are looking for, they have VGA to component cables varying in length from 3', 6', 12', 25', and 50'. They also have a VGA to s-video/composite adapter as well, they can be found here respectively:

3' VGA to Component Cable

6' VGA to Component Cable

12' VGA to Component Cable

25' VGA to Component Cable

50' VGA to Component Cable

VGA to S-Video/Composite Adapter

Thanks for the Reply! Unfortunently those cables only work for video cards that support changing their output to be TV compatable, something I'm not so sure mine can do (It might be able to, but it would also be a nightmare to get it working, so I won't bother). It has to be a transcoder for me.

Mostly, I'm just trying to find one that gives out a good picture. If they are all the same, then I would go with the cheapest one.

I'm pretty sure your laptop can output to TV... I've never heard of a laptop user needing a transcoder to output to TV. It's just like a business user hooking up their laptop to a projector or something like that...

Question for you though, what are you going to do for audio output?
