Certain DVI flavors carry the analog signal and other varieties are Digital only. HDMI and DVI share the same exact common LVDS digital signal, that is how HDMI and DVI combination cables exist. But HDMI completely omits the analog portion of it's transmission.
I am USING a DVI-A Cable on one of my Sony GDM monitors. The other monitor uses a standard VGA Cable and both displays are getting signals from an ATI 9700 PRO.
