I guess because the apple cinema display uses DVI-D I cant use the standard VGA to DVI converter cable? So what do I do? The VGA source is a laptop so I cant get a new card.

Get a card with DVI output. DVI-D is a digital connection, VGA is analog. Whats a standard VGA to DVI converter cable? DVI-I to VGA is common, not the other way around.

Its going to be very difficult to connect a digital display to an analog device.

Something like this should work for the smaller Cinima displays, but they aren't common or cheap and I don't think you can find anything to support the dual link needed for the 30" so I hope that isn't what you were after.
