Hi guys, I am new to this forum.

We have an old Sony 50" TV with only DVI connector on the back.
Now i want to hook up the Compaq Laptop to the TV so i can play HD movies (720P) on the TV. However, the laptop only got a VGA output. So my question is, is there any adapter can make this connection work?

Thanks in advance

I hate to say it but both of you guys are wrong. The OP needs a VGA to DVI/HDMI adapter. Most of them cost 100+ and really don't do a good job.

You would probably be better off getting something like this

$67 = $120 - $35 - $18 (15% bing CB *) Patriot PCMPBO25 Box Office All-in-One Media Player

Search for TigerDirect on Bing to get 15% search monitor, lcd, computer and click on the 15% advertisement.

Be careful not all of those will work you need one of the more expensive active options. The cheaper ones are just cables to convert a DVI port on your PC to a VGA output. They usually do NOT work the other way around. You'll need something like this:

Mostly see USB to DVI now for an affordable price, but something like this is what you would need.

DVI ports on the computer also output in analog and you can use an adapter to get VGA out. It does not work the other way however. The TV only accepts a digital signal and the VGA output on the computer is analog.

yeh unless you have a weird TV like happy medium which can accept an analog signal through the DVI port (unlikely for you).

Yes its a Digital and analog dvi. Made back in 2004 I think. First wave of Sony 40 inch CRT's. Big bad ass CRT FTW! DOes 1080i through dvi. Before hdmi was made.

If this picture is correct, then that DVI port is a DVI-D port - it doesn't accept any analog signals.

If you want to use your laptop, you'd need to follow blanketyblank's advice and get some kind of active adapter. A simple cheap cable won't do the trick.

yes, the pic is correct.
looks like i should build a htpc rather than buying $100 analog to digital converter :\
