Is the DVI adapter that comes with most video cards used as just that, an adapter? Connecting your CRT through a VGA+DVI adapter won't give you a digital signal, will it?

DVI Adapter

"Duh". 😛

It takes a DVI-I connection and gives you the VGA pins from it in a format compatible with a VGA monitor. It does not transcode DVI into VGA.

You wont get a digital signal. Like Mattias99 stated, it will simply convert your digital signal to analog.

wrong.. there is no conversion at all.
As Matthais99 stated, DVI-I contains both digital and analog signals, so it's just a head converter. It's still using the DAC on the video card.
