VGA to Component Cable

Can I use something like this VGA to component cable to hook up a console or DVD player directly to a computer monitor?

don't see why not, as long as the console is next gen, last gen will output 480... which will look crappy on a monitor

Consoles and DVD players output YPbPr colorspace over component, PC monitors operate on RGB. Hence, that cable won't help, you'll need a transcoder such as this:
