Here are two VGA to component adapters for $89 and $119:

http://www.edishnet.com/DirecTV/accessories.htm

http://www.digitalconnection.com/HomeTheater/9a60.htm

These are meant for hdtv receivers but can they be used to display computer vga output to tv's with component input or HDTV compatible with component inputs

I was originally looking at Mitsubishi projection tvs with VGA inputs. Actually went to a store with my laptop to try it out and it works great!! Better than any TV out from a video card, crisp text; only drawback is 640x480 (hence VGA, not SVGA), but still very nice. The salesguy told me there are cables from VGA to component out that does the same. So this is what I found instead. Will this work?

Any experience?

I have the 2nd one that you have linked to, and it is very nice =). Yes, it converts VGA output to component that can be fed into your hdtv.

The RCA one sucks...its cheap for a reason...it simply won't work for some people. Its really made for the RCA HDTV satellite receivers that have a VGA output only. Not for video cards on computers.

The AA one is supposedly really good...the other good one is the Key Digital. Whenever you use one of these you have to setup your video card for custom resolutions and timings using a utility called Powerstrip. Just plugging it in can damage your TV. Best bet is to hook it to a monitor, set up the timings and res, then plug into the transcoder.

The nice thing is, you can set your resolutions to 540p and it will translate to 1080i on your TV. Crisp text on a big monitor :)
I plan on doing this sometime in the near future.
