VGA specification

Exactly what data is sent to each of the pins? How does the machine know the monitor's maximum supported resolution? Why does it have a maximum resolution?
I'm wanting to build a monitor from chips. Low res, experimental.
I'm also wondering of Apple's ADC specification. A digital monitor would be more practical.

No. Not at all. VGA uses _analog_ signals, Red, Green, Blue, plus digital HSync, VSync. At least, later versions also having a serial data stream ("DDC") through which the computer can read the monitor's capabilities.

VGA specifications include common resolution timings. Manuals of REALLY old VGA or SVGA monitors will contain everything you want to know about signal mappings and timings.
