Sorry, not to thread crap, but I got my 9700NP to 353/340 with no cooling mods whatsoever. It sorta makes me realize that the gains from aftermarket cooling are minimal unless you go with water and a volt mod.

another benefit is that you can run the same clock speeds as stock but quiter

Well, I'm sure it has some benefit, otherwise you guys wouldn't be buying them in droves. The people on the AT forums are generally well-informed, and many of you guys have them so I'm sure they're good.

My problem is with ripping apart my precious 9700...I don't want to do it. I modded my old 8500 with a rackmount server heatsink and I regretted it; the gains were not sufficient for what I had done.

For someone with a new 9800PRO it's a much more serious situation; they would be voiding their warranty for this silencer doo-dad.

I disagree. I could only get around 400 mhz core on my 9800 bios flashed pro, with vga silencer I could get 450 on high speed.

You can also transfer the vga silencer over to another card.

THe VGA silencer doesn't void your warranty (uh, technically it does i guess) unless you also throw away your stock HSF. Just stick it back on if it ever dies and RMA, which is everyone does.

And then they complain about the high price of video cards.

If you've ever taken Economics, I'm sure you wouldn't be nearly as hasty to make such conclusions. Pricing is based on a lot of things. When manufacturers offer a warranty, they've already factored that into their costs.

ForceCalibur, don't argue with Rollo. He will just call you a Big Chief and give it to you like you want it. Believe me, you don't want that to happen.

I put a vga silencer on my 9800pro and don't really notice a difference, overclocking my card doesn't really make a difference in games either. If I had it all to do over again, I wouldn't get the silencer and just leave the card stock, since I'm not a big overclocker anyway.

same here. i just installed me vga silencer onto my 9800 last week and still havent even attempted to OC it. i dont even really play very graphic intensive games right now so i guess it was a waste of $15 for me because i really dont NEED the extra fps in CS.( already 100 constant lol)

I bought mine for a silent comp, the stock cooler on both the 9700 and 9800 is way too loud IMO.

Noise level is a big factor, plus don't forget that the VGA silencer blows the heat generated by your GPU directly out of the case. That is a huge benefit.

Or how about the a-holes who buy a better card than their's only to swap their dead mod-gone-wrong and return the box for their money back? I declare a holy jihad on these RMA-tards.
