vga/dvi splitter cable vs dual vga/dvi

Could someone please let me know if there's much of a visual hit if i bought a splitter cable for dual monitors vs the more expensive solution of purchasing a video vard with vga/dvi ports?

We're purchasing a second monitor for the developers and i just wanted to get some opinions.
