When I start WinXP I get an error. "Windows\system\VGA Oem.fon" Missing or corrupt, Start WinXp and go to the Recovery console.

And then what? I can format and reinstall XP, but there must be an easier way
Any help would be appreciated. There is a 7 year old girl who is sitting in her chair twiching and wants to play on her computer.

thanks

Let me guess: she ran as an administrator-level user.

Tsk tsk tsk.

The error seems pretty self-explanatory: a file is missing. Copy and replace it if you can. The only problem is, what other files might be missing?

By the time you answer that question, you may have spent more time than if you had just reinstalled.

You hit that one on the head...
How can I reinstall xp without formating?
I can get the file from another computer and install in the system dir. I guess I would have to use dos. This is an 8kb file and it brings windows to its knees

Thanks

If you put the install disk in, you can run the recovery console, which will give you a DOS shell. There's also something called a "repair install," though I wouldn't know if it does exactly what it sounds like it does.

You'll need to install all security updates again after doing this.
