I don't celebrate for murderers. Some couldn't help it so not all veterans are bad people but they shouldn't be put above anyone else. I'm offended that my grandfather was conscripted to kill a bunch of nazis (probably all of whom were more innocent than most Americans at the time) and that Wilson got two of his uncles (one on each side) killed.

Basically, veterans day wouldn't exist if the people who created veterans day didn't enslave the people who were to be celebrated for.

Thank you to all that have served this country!
They served the state, not the people.
All gave some and some gave all.
Yep... it was all so big fat hyper-businessmen like your grandparents could get above market profits and so people like you can continue to keep it all going by voting for neoconservatives like Ted Cruz.

Veterans have sworn to defend and protect the US Constitution as well as enemies both foreign and domestic which is for the people and the country.

If it wasn't for veterans your life could very well be drastically different.

I didn't realize my grandparents were rich. One worked for the railroad and the other was a barber.

Anarchist420 is both an example of the greatness that is Americas freedoms and the lunatic fringe that must be kept out of power.

The guy who doesn't work and lives off his parents' wealth complains about people being unjustly enriched.

Pretty classic.

Perhaps it *could* be but if it was, then I'd probably be dead by now... I wouldn't know the difference. I don't like my life and really I wouldn't care if someone killed me now because I wouldn't know the difference.

There is the saying "if you don't know, you won't know" and that applies well over 1/2 of the time.

You know that going out and getting a job often helps give people a sense of accomplishment and worth that might really improve your quality of life.

We were in our local parade yesterday with my 8 year old girls scout troop.

Watching the old men salute the flag as the girls carried it by was touching.

It got me thinking we as the citizenry owe it to our men and women serving to ensure our leaders only rely on their service to defend us from legitimate threats. Too many dead soldiers fighting for dumb causes, that in no way erodes the service and the displayed love for country our soldiers display.

I was thrilled that most under anticipated the size of our local celebration and parade it's was huge and a great reminder after another divisive election that were all Americans.

There was no Obama. no Romney, no democrat, no republican, no ideology.

Just displayed gratitude for all those who serve and served.

We served so others may have the freedom to disagree without having to give up their own lives.

We could only be so lucky.

Find a bridge or go play on some train tracks!

The freedom that you have to spout the garbage that you do is due to the lives that service men and women have given to protect your freedom.

Veterans have sworn to defend and protect the US Constitution as well as enemies both foreign and domestic which is for the people and the country.

Then why aren't they doing it? The biggest enemies of this country are in Washington D.C. (District of Criminals).

When is the military going to invade D.C. and bring all those terrorists to justice?

If it wasn't for veterans your life could very well be drastically different.

LOL. Yes, without the military killing brown people all over the world, my life would be a real disaster!

Woe be thy name of the man who has to deal with brown people!

Thank you to all that have served this country!

All gave some and some gave all.

You're welcome! And, if I recall correctly, a thank you back at you is in order too. So thank you.

My service pales in comparison to many others, just a few years spent on a submarine packed with world-ending nuclear missiles, but I'm glad I did it. It helped to enlighten me about people I had previously dismissed as thoughtless bigots (conservatives) and in fact, helped me leave behind some naive notions about the necessity of the military and war.

Believe it or not, I enlisted as a die-hard liberal and a hugely anti-war, anti-military type. I wanted to challenge my own preconceptions and see if they held up, and do something entirely out of my comfort zone. Mission accomplished. The preconceptions did NOT hold up.

Is that really why you served? Was it really a case of selfless charity? Or was there some selfish interest in it for you?

In the beginning:
Yanked out of college before time scheduled - not able to formally graduate
I took a career that did not provide for my family to the point that my children were eligible for free lunches.
Pay itself was half what my best man was earning out of college.
Nearest quality of medical care for my wife was 200 miles away.
Lived in a community where the military was only wanted for the money that they spent.

After leaving active duty - woken up in the middle of the night and told to be ready to depart without being told where, why or how long.

Being told that after a 6 hour flight after a 10 work day; that I had to drive 10 miles out of my way just to fill out paperwork before trying to get some sleep

Yes, I think I was selfish in my interests.

An enormous thank you to all that served in whatever capacity.

As I have grown older I feel compelled to tell a story on Veterans day. It's a story that I don't know as well as I should and one I'll never know fully.

It's a story about a 16 year old that lied about his age to join the Navy in WWII. About how he thought he'd pulled some pretty good duty aboard a hospital ship called Hope. He never saw action aboard that ship but he saw plenty of the aftermath. His job was to go ashore after the battles and bury the body parts and the dead. His orders sometimes were to bury them where they lay and as the tide rose and the surf came in they were released from their hasty graves and he'd get to bury them again and again.

He was in the second boatload ashore at Hiroshima, the Navy having told them it was safe. He saw unfathomable devastation and people with unimaginable injuries. Later in life he would wake up some mornings with huge swellings on his back or inside his thighs that would subside on their own later in the day. He had strange and unusual ailments that were debilitating in nature and late in his life he was unable to walk. He was in constant pain for nearly 30 years.

He never spoke of what he experienced. I learned it in bits and pieces and as I said I'll never know the whole story. He did not share his experiences even with his spouse until just a few years before his death. One thing that was shared with me is that he went to sleep every night hoping that he would not relive his experiences during the war. He never got relief from that and would wake up most nights screaming as the thoughts raced through his head in nightmares that just would not go away.

He tried to commit suicide three times that I know of for sure. Had a bought with alcoholism. But he provided for his family, kept a roof over their head and maintained a lower middle class lifestyle while holding a job, raising two children and was married to the same woman all his life.

He wrote numerous letters to the VA asking for help and all were ignored. Later in life they started to pay attention only when his spouse got involved. PTSD was not considered real and proving it was a tough sell.

Thank you for your service Dad. I hope your death has brought you the peace you never had during your lifetime.

I wonder if maybe you didn't have a better choice. Regardless, I have no reason to believe you served for anyone's benefit other than your own.

If all these military people and veterans chose to serve so that they could "protect the freedoms of Americans", why is America growing less and less free? Why is the number of laws, statutes, regulations, and alphabet agencies designed to restrict freedom going up and not down?

Answer: Because it's all just a bunch of bullshit, that's why.
