If you live in a Verizon Fios area, can you please tell me if you are happy with the service--internet and tv overall. I have Comcast where I am now, and the internet is horrid, slow and goes out all the time. From my understanding, Fios has insane upload speeds. Also, does Fios let you use your own modem? Thanks.

There is no modem with FiOS.

However, you do need their router, at least for activation of service, and if you have TV service, it's just simpler to use their router.

Though it IS technically possible to use whatever router you want if you feel like going through the effort, there are guides online.

TV quality is above comcast's generally. While there are no 4k offerings currently on Verizon, their 1080p content tends to be the highest quality available among the big cable companies.

I personally haven't used their TV service in several years, but I have had 15/5mbps, 25/25mbps, 75/75mbps, 150/150mbps, and now 1gbps (940/940mbps) from FiOS continuously since about 2008. With the 1gbps service starting April of last year. I can say their internet service is nearly flawless, there have been some occasional rare late night DNS issues, though they're usually short term events isolated to late night hours. The biggest complaint I have is with their peering to youtube. During evening hours, youtube simply buffers, even at 720p and 480p res. With 1gbps internet, you'd think a 5-10mbps youtube video would have no issues. At the same time this is happening i can download a torrent at 500mbps+, or steam games at 600-700mbps+. But youtube still buffers due to saturated peering points. You can get around this with a VPN, but it's inconvenient.

Besides that though, FiOS is by far the best internet available.

Though I will say comcast does offer their 2gbps fiber service here, tempting, but still a bit pricey for me considering the local network upgrades i'd need to do to take advantage of that.

While I do not currently have "Verizon" FIOS, I have Frontier FIOS, which used to be Verizon FIOS here in Texas.

I have been very happy with their picture quality of their TV service, and with the internet speeds. I currently have 150/150 Mbps. I do want their gigabit service, but they are really pricey on that compared to everyone else!

I have not had any issues with the internet going down or the TV service going down, so happy with that aspect.

As far as the router, I still have the Verizon branded one, as I didn't have to give it up when Frontier bought out the area. I understand you still need their router if you have the TV service, but if you just get their internet service, i think you can use your own.

The only real complaint I have is that they are a little pricier than everyone else, but again, i have had no issues with the service!

LOL, just realized this is an OLD thread! Sorry about that!

I have Fios in Manhattan for the last 7-8 years or so. Cable is OK I guess, don't watch much TV but the sports channels could benefit from 1080P. Mostly 720p os 1080i. I have called them once in 7-8 years for an internet outage that lasted maybe 20 mins. Pretty stable IMO. I am planning on going back to Spectrum as my fios bill is too damn high. Will try negotiating with them first.

My only issue with cable is the upload speed is just abysmal.

I uploaded around 46GB today in about 10 minutes on FIOS. Getting a solid 700-800mbps. I guess if you rarely if ever upload things, it won't be too bad for you though.

The best time for FIOS to renew your contract would have been in November for Blackfriday, or December after Christmas. As they offered anyone with a contract ending in the next 6 months, new customer pricing.
It allowed me to go from a $94.99/month bill to a $79.99/month bill, locked in for 2 years.

Not sure what deals you'll be able to negotiate with them at the moment.

I have an old grandfathered plan. I am planning on calling them to see what they have. I don't use the phone, don;t even know the number. All i need is internet and basic cable TV. I am sure they will try to gouge me so I am prepared to just get rid of them and go back to Spectrum and then mayhaps rejoin fios when I am not a customer.

It ended up being cheaper for me to add TV AND phone service than to go without.

I just need Internet. But just gigabit internet was $135/month. But if I added Custom Infotainment & Drama TV service, and Home phone service. Then it came down to $79.99/month.

So I got TV and Phone despite having neither one plugged in.

FIOS has some dumb pricing, that's for sure.

Churn your account internet only never makes sense for existing fios customers. They only want to add to your services not remove.
My best off was $80 for 50mb last year while the new customer promo was $40 for 100/100mb service. Existing customers paid twice the price for half the speed.
Cancelled the account and signed up for new account with the same address & name. I just left to social number off and paid the $150? deposit, which just was refunded to me after 1 year of service.
I love fios but their rate tiers are designed to be confusing, their rate change policies are a joke and their retention offers are random and generally meager.

To be clear I literally signed up for a new account saying I want it installed on a day a week in the future, I then called to cancel the account I had on the same day as the new install.
They removed the old phone backup, installed a new ont and removed the old coax

I’ve had FiOS tv and internet for the last five years. Absolutely zero complaints.
