Lately I've been addicted to Roller Coaster Tycoon and all the add on packs. Anyone who has played this game knows that the sounds and music from it stick in your head.

Well, a few nights ago I was watching MI-2 on cable. Suddenly, I thought I heard the sounds of Roller Coaster Tycoon (RCT) coming from my office. I jumped up, and took a look, but the computer was idle and RCT was not running. I listened, and the RCT sounds were coming from the movie!

It turns out in one scene, MI-2 uses the exact crowd noise soundtrack RCT uses. Complete with the kid saying "come on, come on, come on," and the man yelling.

The scene I'm talking about is when Tom Cruise tells the girl/thief what the mission is, and she gets pissed at him... they're in a hotel room or villa, and there is a festival or something outside the open doors.

In RCT you can hear clearly the soundtrack I'm talking about it if you focus the screen on an area of your park without rides so you only hear crowd noises.

Weird, huh?

Sound fx companies license CDs full of sound fx to game, movie, music, TV show, theater and other show business companies all the time.

That is why, for example, you will hear the Doom door opening sound effect in 1 out of every 10 scifi movie or TV series.

You don't think every show business company goes out and records every sound effect they have to use, do you?

When would they ever have the time to work on the real creatives?

ME TOO! especially the people scream and door open/close sounds. I was thinking there must be a server somewhere like a big sound bite database or something. what the heck!!

Heh I first noticed sound recycling when the Middle Eastern guys in Indiana Jones screamed exactly like the Storm Troopers in Star Wars.

Pac man is still the biggest...used as any kind of generic video game sound no matter what it is.
