since when i built in my asus sli board i didnt pay attention and the pannel or bezel or whatever that comes with the motherboard the stuff that should go inside next to the ethernet and keyboard well it blocked the sockets so i had to bend em out to plug my stuff in. so today i figure since thats an ugly solution id open my comp and take my motherboard out vbend the stuff back in properly and my comp would be prettier on the back. so i did that.
when i rebooted the comp enetered bios and said that the system had been opened and ishould check it.
it didnt wanna boot and said cmos check sum error.
when i pressed f1 to continue windows would crash in the middle of boot up over and over again.
and the bios didnt find my dvd writer and dvd rom anymore.
after building everything out once more and back together same stuffstill.
so i thought i maybe broke my onboard ide controller and called my buddy. he said motherboards are resilient and its unlikely that i broke anything and i should check if the cable sits properly. well it did and he said to change the cable cuz roudned cables break sometimes? i wouldnt see why but anyway i plugged it in with the non rounded one that came with the asus and it recognized my dvd writer but not my dvd rom. it booted up but very slow. then i removed the dvd rom totally and now it works again and boots fast as before but how in the world did i break that dvd rom? i didnt even touch it.

any ideas?

Did you disconnect the devices before you messed with the back of the MB? All I can think of us that when you were fiddling with the plugs at the back, maybe you sent a large static shock to the DVD ROM. Or maybe some capacitor on the MB discharged.

let it sit for a few days. then try again. lite on dvdrw are like $60 so its not a huge loss vs. what could have happened,

So is the NEC 3520A (currently $63+ship at 'Egg, or $61+freeship if you get the black one, today only) and it's a fantastic performing part. (VCDHelp/VideoHelp.com link) ... but that's irrelevant as he says his DVD-ROM is what busted ;)

As far as the "fried" component, I'd do what ribbon13 said -- let it sit and give it a bit. Try the DVD-ROM in another computer, try a different DVD-ROM in yours, etc. Most likely it could be what shira said, it just got zapped, but you also might have accidently bent/broke a pin, bent a capacitor, etc. There are lots of possible reasons for something like that to happen, and you just need to start from basic troubleshooting techniques -- is that DVD-ROM actually dead or not? :D
