Very weird situation with a brand new SB Live! Value card.

I just put this new card in and everything seemed dandy until I raided the sound level to about %85. My speekers made an extremely loud, feedback sound. It was almost like those sirens during a tornado watch. By the way, I raised the volume up to %85 while nothing was playing. Does this sound like a problem with the card or something with the speakers? I have a brand new set of Altec Lansing ACS45.2 speakers. I would greatly appreaciate any input.

It sounds like the sound it makes when my computer with that card freezes.

Is it frozen?
Does is stop making that noise?
Have you installed all the latest drivers?

It never froze or anything yet. I have live!ware 3.0 installed.
I wonder if something on the card got bent in shipping? They shipped it wrapped up in bubble wrap but squeezed into a small fedex box. So even though it had bubble wrap around it, the bubble wrap might of squashed a capacitor or something...I dunno. I get great sound out of the card as long as I don't go above the %80-%85 mark for volume.

I think I might now what else it is but mighthave to wait til I turn my pc off to test it. You know how the value cards have those different color jacks? Isn't the red one for a Mic? Just something I'm thinking of.

It sounds to me like mechanical feedback. The output of the speakers may be getting fed back to the sound card by vibration, amplified, and reoutputted just like a bad PA system. Try sitting the speakers on a pillow or something spongy just for a test and see if it makes a difference. Another possibility is feed back through a power supply getting looped back.

Yes I do. I think that might be the problem. I'm trying to find the mute to it under liveware 3.0. I can always turn the outer off and unplug it.

eh, might be? 😉😛

Hey guys, it was the mic after all. It was placed so far away from the speakers that I didn't think at first that it was the problem. Thanks for the tip 🙂
