Very, VERY weird sound problem.

Whenever I tap my headphones, a thumping sound comes out my speakers (if the speakers are off, nothing happens). I've triple checked, I'm positive that's whats happening. Any theories?

No, the headset has no mic. I'm not THAT stupid. Seriously, I'm completely stumped. And the cord has nothing to do with it, I've done scientific tests. It only happens when I tap on the back or the earpiece, not the side. But it does happen when I shake it around.

Just sounds like you have the headphones plugged into the mic port.

I'm sure you aren't that dumb so I can only guess it is some software issue.

When did this start happening?

^ sounds plausible.

Also, maybe you have the recording device set for your AUX port, and you have your headphones plugged into that.

I have my headphones plugged in to my front audio port (the one on my case) and my speakers plugged in to my onboard audio. And I checked, they are defenitely plugged into the headphone port and not the mic port (I even plugged them into the mic port, and I couldn't hear anything, so I couldn't have made that mistake in the first place).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the headphones have to be sending some sort of electronic signal to the speakers to make the sound? How could tapping a pair of headphones do that?

Are you 100% sure that you have your front ports wired correctly? Any speaker/headphone can function as a microphone, just not well. Would definitely be able to pick up a thumping as you describe though. My bet is still on your headphones being directed to one of your inputs. Beyond that, strange problem...

I tried another pair of headphones, those do it too. I guess my front ports are just wired wrong .

So, the headphones work fine if the speakers are off, correct?

I don't have much experience as my headphones work if my speakers are on or off, because I plug them into the headphone slot of my center speaker(Logitech 5.1).

Yes, I would definately check the mobo manual and make sure you have the wires for the front panel correct. (Wires are usually the cause in 90% of all problems)

Other than that, if they work when speakers are off, don't worry about it.

Hi, A earphone is same as a mike only not very efficient. Sounds like the guy that said you are plugged into the wrong socket may be correct. Front Sound cound be connected incorrectly to the Mother Board. Try plugging into the other socket on front and check the connection inside to the MB. Good Luck, Jim

I get this, too, but I have my headphones on splitters (with the other side of the splitter going to my speakers). If you have a similar setup, it's just a signal reflection in the wire, and there's nothing you can do about it (other than not tapping on your headphones while the speakers are on, or unplugging the headphones while you are using the speakers). Well, I guess I could use a real amp rather than just a passive splitter, but that seems like overkill.

If you have the speakers plugged into the rear outputs and the headphones in the front, it shouldn't be happening (unless on your motherboard those pins are physically wired together at some point).
