Very very slow in xp

I'm having an problem with xp whenever my dsl modem is turned on. While the modem is on and win xp is booting my computer just freezes at the desktop for like 20sec. (I think it's detecting the network settings) but why does it take so long? Anyone else experiencing this problem or have a solution for this? thx in advance
 
So basically what you are saying is that if I buy a router it would fix the problem? if so i'm willing to buy one. I can't stand lag. Any recommandation if so?
