Inguyen: I live in DC, and I have Earthlink/Mindspring DSL. It's available in a lot of areas now... you should double check.

OT, but it's funny how quickly things change today. I remember two years ago when we would have all been trying to reconcile whether they offered x2 or whatever the other standard was. I don't even remember what it was called and that was the one I used, LOL. Then came the v.90 standard union and now we have xDSL and cable and other broadband choices.

Where will we be in 3 years? Most people won't be on dial-ups you've got to believe. Amazing tech stuff.

Edit: I forgot to think of AOL users. They will still be happy with dial-ups.

have to agreed with everyone about the crappy MSN rebate. Only first time buyers sign up for craps like that. MSN=Evil!

I have to laugh at this description:

'32MB SDRAM for multitasking power"

What kind of multi-tasking "power" are you going to have with 32 MB? Heh.

you gunna load 3 games of solitare and beat all three AT THE SAME TIME!!! hehe..

Like my description says, I have DSL available thru COVAD, but ONLY 144/144 IDSL for $70/mo.. that's freakin ridiculous.. my friend who lives 5-7 minutes away by car.... gets the option for about the same price for ~600/128 RADSL... it's just where i live.. GRRRRRR.

I agree with Colrenea. This deal is not geared to someone that wants a broadband connection. I signed up for 3 years with MSN when the special just started. Since then, I got a cable modem. I pay for both services, but I use the MSN service at work on my laptop. (Don't tell my boss though!) It works out well when I travel out of state, also. MSN has local numbers everywhere. Not a bad deal, but not really a good deal. If you buy a Gateway or Dell for $799, you're gonna spend $21.95 a month for internet access anyways! Or $40-70 for broadband. I think you guys are a little too hard on MSN. Lighten up a little.

One big thing to keep in mind, though: You're assuming that $21.95/month for dial-up access will remain at least a decent deal for the next three years. Do you really think so? I think it's likely that in three years, people locked in MSN contracts will be the only ones paying more than $20/month for dialup.

btw, for local use, if you're not travelin everywhere... there's LOCAL ISP's... which if you do your research, will run ~10-15 usually.. yes, usually on a 1-3 yr contract as well... all prepaid... but if you're gunna do it for the year w/ MSN, go local.

Also, speakeasy (who supplies the DSL from covad to me) gives me an ISP account.. that's good almost nationwide i do believe.. tho i could be wrong... but it's a good deal in case ya need it.
