Very, *VERY* exciting new goodies from Canon!

This is major news people! Two potentially sweet lenses and what could be the best 35mm format digital SLR to date have just been leaked. Info and PDFs here. The most exciting thing about this is that Canon is actually going to do something with their diffractive optics technology. Really exciting stuff!

what's so special about those?

The 70-300mm is the first DO zoom ever. It's not really a special lens, but it probably means that Canon is going to bring DO technology to the consumer market which will benefit everybody.

The 28-300mm has a really large zoom range with the addition of advanced weather sealing and new generation IS. It's probably going to be the only lens most people will need.

The new camera has over 8MP with 8.5 frames/second, with a buffer of 40 frames. That's huge.

Diffractive optics is like two fresnel screens made to fit together on the sub-micron level. It's a way of dealing with chromatic aberations with one element instead of two. DO technology allows optics to be made much lighter than with traditional technology. There's a really good article about it I'll see if I can find.

I've been hanging stage lights for 18 months now, and I never bothered to find out how a Fresnel lens works haha. At least I can pronounce it correctly, I suppose.

Anyway, thanks for giving me the impetus to go look 🙂

The 10D replacement probably won't be announced until the fall at the earliest. Photokina is this year, maybe then. At this point anyone talking doesn't know, and anyone who knows isn't talking 😉

And RossMAN will be first in line 😉
There will never be hot deals for lenses. They aren't like electronics crap that drops drastically in price a couple months after release. Good optics always have, and always will cost good money.

Yeah. It hurts a lot less though when it's time to sell lenses because they hold their value so well. If you buy used to begin with you can usually sell a few years later with practically no loss at all.

That's what I'm waiting for. A 10D replacement would be enough for me to jump into the digital SLR market. (The Digital Rebel is too entry level for my tastes.)

BTW, I have the EF 75-300 and that is truly a mediocre lens. Works fine and better than the off-brand stuff, but certainly not a great lens.

That new 70-300 will be lighter and hopefully it will be moderately affordable. I'd be willing to pay around twice what I paid for the 75-300, if it's a better lens.

I dunno about that. The 28-300 is gonna be a monster. Have fun carrying that around.

What's the best bang for the buck in a DSLR with two bright zoom lenses? One that zooms to 70 or 100mm, and the other that zooms as far as practical, with image stabilization? I'm guessing it will be in the $10,000.00 range for the three pieces.

Right now I carry around a 28-80 and an 80-200. Could it really be bigger/heavier than both of those lenses combined? I doubt it....

The new 28-300mm will be about 3.5 pounds, 1,670g from the PDF. It's about the same as the 70-200mm IS, which is not at all unwieldy, in my opinion. It's not a small lens, but it's lighter than carrying three other lenses instead. Plus it has IS 😀 Actually this one is probably not something I would buy.

The 70-300mm DO does have some appeal though. It's not actually any lighter than the current 70-300mm(about a pound and a half), in fact it's an ounce or two heavier (probably due to the new generation IS and ring USM), but it's over an inch shorter, thanks to the DO. This makes it a *very* compact lens with plenty of reach. Plus it's black. Try taking candid pictures with a big white 70-200mm IS and you'll know why a compact *black* lens that does 300mm is a good thing. The old 70-300mm IS is kind of a dog by most accounts, but this looks promising. If the image quality is there I'll be all over this one for those times when stealth is more important than brightness.

Ornery, a 10D with a 24-70mm f/2.8 and a 70-200mm IS f/2.8 would run about $4500ish I think. Shouldn't be much more, maybe a little less. That's about as bright as SLR zooms get at the present.

Dartworth, I've got enough photo gear to choke a donkey. There's really no point in going through it all. If you need to know something PM me 🙂

I've just about convinced myself that I need a 1DII. Don't know where Ima get the money though 🙁

Edit: Oh yeah, both the 35-350mm and 70-300mm IS that these lenses are clearly meant to replace were aging and due for an update. It's not surprizing at all that Canon would choose to replace both of them, but I find it very odd that they would choose to replace them both at the same time. I can think of more than a couple other things that seem way more pressing. Does this strike anyone else as more than a little bit odd? 😕

Just one more generation of digital to go, and I think I will purchase one. Not the then newest one, but this. I think the quality will do for most of my needs, and the price of this class of camera ought to come down.

Of course, I still need the 4"x5" view camera first 😀

Technology is great, but it's gonna be a long time before digital SLRs eclipse that ancient format.

forget expensive cameras and lenses, I wanna see some more bugs!!

In a couple months I'll be so busy with bugs I won't have time to blink. January is the time to obsess over gear 😀

Actually I've got kind of a fungus Jones coming on. I found a couple of new places last fall that should be pretty interesting.
