Very unpleasant experience with Cambridge Soundworks phone rep

I have been having some problems with my speakers the past few months where volume level would fluctuate intermittently. I spent some time on the phone with a CSW tech about a month ago trying to troubleshoot the problem, but since it's intermittent it was difficult to pinpoint the issue. He guessed it was my A/V switcher, which I am using for consoles/TV audio switching only. I wondered if it was the volume control, but he said that if there was a problem with the volume control, it would be a sound/no sound issue and not fluctuating volume.

This past (long) weekend I finally had some time to sit down and enjoy my PS3 and HTPC, and the volume fluctuation got really bad. It's pretty much guaranteed to happen now, regardless of source (which eliminates the A/V switcher as the problem; my HTPC is the other source). I called CSW this morning hoping to get some warranty support but was told that my particular set only had a 1 year warranty (which is consistent with their website), and that I should just purchase a new volume control for $20.

All of this would normally be fine, hardware breaks, but the attitude of the phone rep was terrible and made the experience worse than it should have been. I told her that I was disappointed that I was having problems with these speakers after owning them for less than 2 years, and that I had some other sets of MicroWorks speakers that I've had for 10+ years with no issues. I also told her that I wasn't happy about paying $20 and waiting at least 10 business days for a solution that may or may not solve the problem. Her attitude was basically "tough shit". When I told her I paid hundreds of dollars for the speakers, her response was that she's paid hundreds of dollars for things, too. I asked if she could throw in another volume control for free and she nearly blew her top. At the end of the call, I said to her that I didn't want to cause her any trouble, that I was just unhappy about my speakers. She simply responded with more sarcasm.

So now I feel like a cheapskate and a criminal for wanting my speakers to work properly so that I can enjoy the last long weekend of the year. You would think that the weekend after Christmas people would be in jolly moods. Yes, she has to be at work, but damn, so do I.

I guess this is more of a rant thread than anything, but I would like to know what you guys think could be causing the problem. I'll report back once I have the replacement volume control. Thanks for letting me vent.

Cliffs:
-Speaker volume fluctuating
-Called Cambridge Soundworks, got attitude on 2nd day after X'mas
-New volume control on the way
-Any other thoughts on what the problem is?

Just to follow up from above... I decided not to wait for the volume control and bought a 5.1 receiver instead. Plugged in my speakers and sub, and no more volume fluctuation. Got 3 more speakers on the way to complete the 5.1 set.

At this point it's most likely the volume control that was the culprit, with a small possibility of it being the input port on the sub itself, but I don't really give a shit. The problem's fixed and I'll be able to enjoy my New Year weekend.

Thanks for reading and Happy New Year!
