I was brought a PC today that boots into safe mode without a problem. When booting normally, the background screen is displayed for a couple of seconds and then the monitor just goes white except for the mouse cursor which seems to work just fine. No icons, no start button, nothing. Just a white screen with the mouse pointer. I reboot to safe mode where everything appears to work fine and I go into msconfig and do a selective restart turning off my startup items, win.ini and system.ini. I also edit the autoexec.bat so that nothing unnecessary runs... I reboot. The exact same thing happens. I get the background for a couple of seconds, then the screen turns white. I even tried a new video card and got the same results.

Anyone have any idea what is going on here? What could possibly be happening in normal mode to cause this that is not happening in safe mode?

For Windows, during normal bootup, it loads all necessary drivers for your computer to function. Usually your problem is because of a driver/device driver problem. It works in safe mode because during safe mode bootup it bypasses all drivers/device drivers so it will let you troubleshoot the problem. It's hard to diagnose which driver is the culprit. You have 3 alternatives.

1. Do a format and clean install.
2. Return/Exchange the computer, doesn't it have a warranty or something?
3. During the beginning of bootup, press F8 to give you bootup options. Choose the "step-by-step" process. Then you can choose which drivers to load. Basically, what you want to do is to load all the drivers but one. If that works, then reboot and press F8 again and don't let it load a different driver. What you're trying to do is single out the problem. This way can be long and tedious and it might not even find the problem so I suggest alternative 2.

You could try sfc in safemode but i doubt it will solve the prob. I would install over the top and try and save anything important before format.
