Very strange problem: Clicking Start Menu items gives errors; running them from Desktop is fine

This only applies to some programs, mainly Office and WinMX. If I click on them in the Start Menu, it says that a device attached to the system is not functioning, and gives an mfc42.dll:6880 error. If I copy and paste the shortcut to the desktop and click it there, it works fine.
