Very Strange MP3 problem

I go into Explorer & open the Folder where my songs are & they only go to "J" . No sign of K-Z !
200+ songs are listed in the folder but the 600+ others seem to have just disappeared . I tried rebooting but no luck.

I've done a search in Windows & it cannot locate ANY song after "J". The wierd thing is , is that they all the songs still play in Winamp !

I use Win 2000 , stable system , updated Win, updated virus protection etc.

Help 🙂

One more thing ------ I click on one of the songs in Winamp (view file info) that is'nt listed in the folder in Explorer & it says it's in that Folder , but it's not visible !

In winamp, go to one of the songs in the k-z section. Right-click and view the file info (alt+3?). You'll see the file location. Have the file locations suddenly changed? Have K-Z suddenly become hidden files?

Nope , the file locations are the same that is what's throwing me off .

I right-click on the song in Winamp, view file info ........... And it shows that it's in the folder but when I goto Explorer to look ........ NADA.

Exactly how many files show up? 256? 254? Are the files in the root directory of the drive? What file system is the drive? Do you have "Show hidden files" enabled? Open a command prompt, browse to the directory, and do a "dir /a/on". Try "copy *.* NUL".

Win 2000Pro/NTFS

Show hidden files is not enabled , does not need to be for these types of files.

I know how to bring up the command prompt but you'll have label it a little better for me to understand 🙂
Don't think that's it but ......

Heh.

To open a command prompt, go Start --> Run --> "cmd.exe".

Basic commands:
"dir" -- lists directory contents.
"cd <dirname>" -- change to the listed directory.
"cd .." -- change directory up one level
"cd \" -- change to root directory
"X:" -- change to drive X:
"help" -- list of commands
"help <command>" -- help on a specific command

All the files that I see in Explorer , are in the root dir. The ones that are missing , are also missing in the root dir.

My drive is fairly new . It's one of the newer 80gb Maxtor fluid bearing mdls. A little over a year old. No other problems exsist that I know of. (I have 60gb of free space also) My system is very clean & organized. No BS clutter or programs I don't use are on this computer.
I have Fix-It Utilities System Suite 5.0 & ran all the utilities I could but still cannot locate those damn lost files !
It's just really wierd that I can play all the songs that are listed in Winamp but thier not visible in Explorer , even where the file extension states they are there , I still cannot see them .

When you open up command prompt and hit "dir" in that directory, do they show up?

I would trying creating a new folder on that same drive and go to command prompt and try to copy everything in that entire folder to your new folder.

cd oldfoldername

copy *.* newfoldername

I tried all that & still no good.

One other thing , I anylyzed my drive (what you do before defragging) and there were tons of "Unmovable files" Black Blocks right in the middle of all the others scattered everywhere. Alot many more than normal.

I'm going out tomorrow & purchasing another drive , same one I suppose 🙂
80gb Maxtor/fluid bearing mdl but this time with SATA.
