very slow SMB sharing from new XP install

I just re-installed XP, put SP2 on, all good stuff. Now whenever I try to connect to my pc over the LAN, it takes about 3 min to get a share listing (3 shares), and just as long to get the file listing inside the shares.

Our admin says it's out of his hands, but we had a lot of "master browser" issues (i don't really know what that meant)

Connecting to SMB shares on other computers (i tried XP and NT4) seems fine... any ideas?
