Very slow network transfer speeds please help!

Hi,

I have a netgear R6100 Router. I have been using it for about 2 years now. I have majority of the house wired with Gigabit Connections running Through a few switches.

I used to have very fast transfer speeds. 8-10 GB files regularly transferred within 2-3 minutes. at ~100Mbytes/sec.

Recently I had to move the location of my router. Ever since then Network speeds Have dropped. Regardless of the computer I use I only get transfer rates of 14 MB per second. I doubt it is a location because previously at this location I had my server that I transferred files to and it always received files at full speed.

I have tried many different wires tried resetting all switches/bypassing all switches. Nothing seems to return the network to its original speed. Regardless of which computers I use to transfer the speed is the same for all computers.

Any idea what could be going on over here? Any potential solutions I can try?

Thanks for your help.

You are saying the clients are wired and they are now slow? Or are they wireless? You mentioned moving the router, so it is now on a different switch? 14MB/s is approximately 100mbit/s (100/8 is 12.5 but the transfer rate could be an estimate), did you connect it to a 100mb switchport? Is there a link that is only 100mbit? Did you have an update that perhaps could be a cause? There was a windows update awhile ago that kind of broke networking...

All the clients are wired. All of them have gigabit networking. They were all running at ~100Mbyte+/sec (~800-1000 Mbits per second). I have tried Mac OS to Mac OS transfers and Mac OS to Windows 7 transfers. Same speed for all of them. So it is unlikely to be a operating system problem. Would you happen know which update for Windows 7 broke networking? I can see if I have this update and try removing it.

It is going slightly higher than 100 Mbit. My current transfer speeds are in the range of 14-20 Mbytes/sec.

All the connections on the ethernet switches indicate (via light color) that they are connecting with a gigabit connection.

Use iperf to test between clients.

Please elaborate on what the config was before, and after. Such as the physical path between devices, cabling, etc.

If possible, use iperf and a couple of the pcs and test each switch at the switch itself

I presume the network cards all state that they are actually connected at 1Gb/s?

Remove the Router from the equation. Unhook all lines accept the server and one machine and do a transfer?

Bad cabling....pinched cabling somewhere in wall?

Test all your patch cables?

Software configuration....Windows or MAC. It does happen.

Start small and work your way out.

I did more investigative work. Turns out my router is stuck in 100M mode. All links are being negotiated at 100M. Rebooting or Changing cables does not affect this. Any ideas?

Thats right R6100 is 10/100mbps router , but still you are getting your speed limited 14mbps . Can you check your router CPU usage , did you update your firmware on your router ?

You are right. That Solved the problem. I rewired things so the switches are involved and the router is no longer Involved in the transfer. That solved all problems. Thank you.

I guess I got lucky the first time and assumed my router is a gigabit router.

This also means that I'm not getting my maximum Internet speed 150Mbs Because of my router.Time to upgrade.

Just want to state that I looked up your Router but was to lazy to read the PDF file. 🙂
I also assumed you had everything wired thru the switches otherwise what's the point of having gigabit switches.

PS: I seriously thought a switch had gone bad.

Haha, I did initially. However when I moved the router. It moved closer To the server. I just had no idea that it was a non gigabit Router. Thanks for your help.

Great that it worked, if you are looking to upgrade the router you can check this router - Asus RT-AC5300 Review, its very amazing router for maximum performance
