Very slow modem connection speeds

I built a new computer with a modem (all we have is dialup). It's a 56k modem, but all we ever connect at is around 38k. So when I connect with this one, I never get above 28k. I hope that the problem is old drivers, but I can't find them anywhere. It's a Diamond SupraMAX 56i modem. If you go to the website, you can find a section for this modem, but i need a more specific model number that I don't know. How can i find the right drivers for this? Or would windows have the most recent problems. If so why is it so slow?

I doubt it's anything to do with your drivers. a 56K modem is only it's THEORETICAL maximum transfer rate, the reality is, sadly, often much less than this. the actual speed you connect at depends on a number of factors, including the quality of phone lines used (as you said you only have dial up, is that all that's available in your area? if so i'm guessing you have rather old lines, so they would impede higher access speeds) also, the server you connect too may automatically limit your speed, or may not be capable of higher speeds. (unlikely, as even 5 or possibly 10 year old servers should be capable of 56K speeds) the maximum rate you can connect at is determined by the handshaking when you dial up. ie. your modem talking to the modem at the server, they then determine the max speed they can talk to each other based on line noise and conditions, max server speed, and probably many other factors that i don't know about. anyway, i could be totally off base here, so if any of you other forum regulars know better please help this fellow out and me as well!
Cheers

yeah, i'm aware of the effect of the phone lines, but I'm comparing it to the speed i get with another computer dialing up to the same service from my house on the same line.

Hmm.. sorry for the long previous post then, lol. i have a tendancy of putting too much info down on paper once i get started. i'd say that your new modem doesn't like your lines as much as your old one then. i would still doubt it's a driver issue though, but possible. is the modem in your new computer an older one than your "old" computer? strange question i know, but just curious. my fiance had some problems with her modem a while ago. it was toast, so we had to buy her a new one. same rig, same lines, different modem and it got, on average, 10K higher connections. maybe the new modem doesn't like noise as much? just a thought.
again, sorry for the long posts. hope someone else out there knows more than I do. lol
Cheers
