Very slow LAN?

Hi, this is what my home network looks like. The problem is that the wireless LAN connection(data transfer) between my Laptop and Desktop is very slow to the tune of 1-2 MB/s. Its really annoying as i transfer files regularly between the two devices. I suppose the normal practical speeds are quite higher. Can you please help me speed it up?

What is the ideal speed that i should expect?

Note: both my Laptop and Desktop are less than a year old. Laptop has Windows 7 64 bit installed and Desktop has Windows 7 32bit installed.

How many walls/floors are between the two?

What is the signal strength reported by the laptop's wireless utility?

Try changing the wireless channel on the router to something else? Use channels 1, 6, and 11.

->There is 1 wall between the two.

->Laptop's wireless signal has either full strength or one bar less than full.

-> I tried changing this setting but it did not affect the speed at all.
 
1-2 MB/s is roughly 10-20 Mb/s, which is in line with actual throughput on 802.11g (overhead, half-duplex, etc).

Those 108Mbps wireless G routers were a hack and generally only work if you have the matching wireless controller in your laptop. If you don't, you're getting 54Mbps, which has an actual throughput closer to 22Mbps.

2)what would be the theorotical and practical transfer rates in that router?

You'll need to update to 802.11n if you want to up your wireless speeds (keep in mind both the router and laptop must support this). If you can, run a cable. Wireless speeds suck horribly compared to wired, especially if you get gigabit.
