Very slow DVD burner

I have a MagicSpin 16x DVD burner. With Verbatim 8x DVD-R madia, it takes around two hours minimum to burn a data DVD with just over four gigs of data (multiple files, for backup).

Where should I start trying to get this thing working at full speed?

Thank you.

Make sure the BIOS is set to AUTO detect the DVD burner. Go to Device Manager and verify that the DVD burner is running in DMA mode, not PIO. If not, then remove the primary and secondary IDE channels and reboot PC. Now verify that the DVD is set to use DMA mode and is NOW running in DMA mode.

I'm using Nero.

Alas, my CMOS has PIO options of AUTO or 0-4, and DMA of AUTO or DISABLED. I will see about moving it to an auxilliary controller, see if that has more precise controls than my MB.

If it matters any:
MSI K7D Master-L
XP2100+ paint-modded to MP but working alone
1 gig 2100 registered
160G Seagate main drive
300G 3-disk JBOD as a secondary

1. DMA needs to be on, in the BIOS, and in Windows (check the properties on the IDE controller).
2. Have it on its own IDE channel.
3. There is no 3. It should work.
4. Who really makes the drive? It will likely say on the top of the drive itself. MgaicSpin is a I/O Magic series.
