Very simple network issue, probably with Sygate!

I have a desktop and a laptop plugged into a Gigafast router. I ran through the network setup wizard on both machines. No odd settings are set in the router's config. I shared a folder on my desktop and gave it a share name. I hop on the laptop, go to Add Network Place, and enter \\desktopname\share name, and it keeps saying it's an invalid folder. Hmm? This has worked no problem a dozen times in the past.

Verify they are on the same workgroup.
Verify they are on the same subnet.
Verify both have firewalls disabled or ports open for file sharing.
Try using \\whatever.computer.ip.adddr\folder instead.

They're not on the same workgroup because my laptop is on my school's domain. However that never stopped it from working before. Never had a problem.

And, it does work viewing shared laptop folders from the desktop, but not viewing shared desktop folders from the laptop.

Running any firewalls?
Sygate on the desktop, everything's set to allow NN traffic.

I can ping the laptop from the desktop but not the desktop from the laptop.

The reason you can't ping the desktop is most likely because Sygate is blocking Incoming ICMP traffic.

You mentioned that you are allowing network Neighborhood traffic through your firewall. What ports did you actually allow??

Also, instead of directly adding a network place, use the following in a Windows Explorer Browser window \\ipaddress.of.desktop

If the location can be found, then it will show the folders that are being shared.

This definately looks to be a firewall problem in which Sygate is not allowing File and Printer Sharing. Start troubleshooting from the bottom and work your way up. Let us know how it goes.

I set Sygate to Allow All and the laptop was able to ping the desktop successfully. When I put Sygate back to Normal, however, it cannot. However I have all NN traffic set to be allowed in Sygate's options. So what other settings should I change?
