Can anyone explain this?

Setting up a very simple LAN.

3 machines:

#1 win2k pro
#2 win2k pro
#3 win98 se

all connected via 5 port linksys workgroup hub

machine 1 can ping machine 2 and 3
machine 2 can ping machine 3
machine 3 can ping machine 2

machine 2 & 3 can NOT ping machine 1

any ideas? I installed some firewall software which i later disabled, could it be that the software set some key in the registry that causes machine 1 to not reply to pings?

If # 1 is connecting to the internet, it's likely the private IP address is being changed to the internet IP address.

Yes, could be the firewall remnants. Some programs are quite rude and don't properly restore the registry when you uninstall them.

For whatever reason machine#1 is either redirecting the ICMP echo response out toward the internet or it is trashing it. I was seeing something similar in my setup until I got my host/domain entry correct in the TCP/IP stack bound to both NICs. They should not be the same.
