Hi all,

I've got some serious problems with this pc, and I'll have to make this post fast seeing how it can crash at any moment.

Specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
MSI K8N-Neo2 Platinum Nforce 3 Socket 939
Tsunami 400W PSU (+3.3V = 28A, +5V = 40A, +12V = 17A)
OCZ Performance Series 512mb DDR400 Ram (CL 2.5)
Galaxy Geforce 6600GT
Sound Blaster Audigy LS
Maxtor 20gb 7200RPM IDE
Pioneer DVD Burner

The Problem:

- Everytime the computer is shutdown from windows (or by disconnecting the power cord) I am unable to turn it back on using the button. I must open up the computer and reset the CMOS via jumper. Only then, after I plug the power cord back in will it turn on.

- At seemingly random times the computer will turn off, and I will be unable to turn it back on without resetting the CMOS. I have no idea why it does this at all. No viruses found on the PC. Only thing different about this in comparison to a normal shut down is that when it turns off the Power Led at the front of the case blinks on/off. The computer does not seem to be in any sleep or suspend mode.

- At seemingly random times the internal speaker/beeper will just go off and emit a contuous beeping sound (no intervals, just beeeeeepppp). The computer begins to freeze at that point and the only remedy is restarting it.

PLEASE NOTE: If I restart the computer from windows, or just use the restart button on the case, it will restart with no problems!

At first I thought this was all heat related, but I also found this very unlikely. The computer was operating with minimal problems for about 3 months before this happened. There are two 28CFM intake fans (one front one side), one 34CFM exhaust and the powersupply exhaust fan.

I monitored my temps constantly and found that peak CPU temp was aboput 42 degrees and peak system was about 32 degrees.

I contacted MSI about only the bios shutdown problem (not the other two), they told me to test it with a different PSU. I do not have a spare one, so I was unable to do this. They also told me to reflash my bios, which I did to no avail.

This all happened after my CDRom drive died.

Suggestions anyone?

Judging from the symptoms alone, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it might be a power issue. Got any extra power supplies you could try?

hmm. bump - help us guys.

check all your connections inside and out. also, make sure you're not shorting out on anything. i like to use the mobo standoff screws with the little felt washers. some would say that's going overboard, but i like to have a nice safe system at any cost.

I'd say you have a short somewhere in your case or your mobo is crapping out... is it new? Has it worked before in other rigs? Check to see that the wires from the "buttons" to the mobo are well hooked up and in the right places. Also, make sure everything's tight and nothing metal is touching the mobo components. This is a hardware issue so pull everything out that you don't need in the case and see if it starts. I've had this problem before and i found that i could use my PC when the mobo was lying on the floor, but not in the case... somewhere, somehow, it would short in the case. So check for that... it's either mobo, wires to case, or power supply. You should go buy a cheap power supply and keep the receipt after yo uuse it to troubleshoot take it back.

Thanks for the bump and help.

I did a bit more investigating and noticed that one of the two wires that connect to my power-on button is cut. It is black (the other is white). Could this little thing be the cause of all these problems?

I will attempt to fix it tonight and report back.
