Hey guys,

a very scary moment just happened to me today after i overclocked my 939 3200+ to 2.2 ghz. Now keep in mind i dont consider myself an overclock expert by far, so my goal was to very slightly o/c without raising voltage. I did everything in 3 mhz increments and even loosened ram timings, just to be safe. Got to 2.2, ran 4 benchies, played some fps, and called it a night.

Next day i put the side panel on my case. Obviously this was going to increase temps, but i figure it couldnt be that much. Started up some counterstrike and within a few minutes of playing, i hear my fan just stop working ! (even my roommate noticed, its a vantec tornado) I IMMEDIATELY kept an eye on temps through sandra (which never went over 40) and turned off the comp. Touched the heatsink and it was scorching even after a few seconds of running without the fan.

Basically my question is, has anyone heard of this happening when you o/c ? Or does anyone know what could be wrong ? Sorry if all this sounds overdramatic, but i worked for about a year just to afford some of the stuff in my case. I just want to be problem-free. (btw cool n' quiet is disabled in bios)

Sounds like either an issue with the vantec tornadp fan, or the cpu fan header on the mobo...

Doesn't sound OC related to me.....Temps from 2.0ghz to 2.2hz would be like less the 2c increase with no vcore increase....

I have only seen idle temps go from 30-32c from 1.8ghz to 2.66ghz w/ .17 more vcore...load temps went from 44-52c in the same range....

NOt surprised on scorching hot. MOdern cpus have been doing this for sometime, hence why we need active cooling.....

thte nice thing is is that most mobos have a safety feature built in that'll shut off your computer before you cpu toasts....

but what if the heat sink holds the heat too long and then its burns the cpu... lol, they should have it so hwne the computer turns off, the cpu fan runs fro 5 min to cool off the heat sink...

i can't imagine your OC caused the problem - the CPU doesn't control the fan, anyways. Also, those winnies are usually good up to 2.6GHz or higher, so i can't imagine you'd be running into issues at 2.2GHz unless you have the worst winnie ever.
