I bought a Zalman VF900CU to go with my eVGA 7900GT OC. I overclocked my videocard to "Superclock" levels, 550 core & 800 memory. I know there is room for higher clocks too. I typically idle at around 39C, and even after two hours of gaming DoD:Source last night, the GPU temp was only 47C!
Most importantly, my machine is now as silent as I wanted it to be. Before I "stepped-up" to the 7900GT, my 7800GT was the loudest thing in my case. I briefly ran the 7900GT with its stock HSF just to test it all out, and it was louder than my 7800GT. It had a higher-pitched whine to it. So I am glad I orderd the Zalman from ZipZoomFly to arrive the same day as the new videocard. Yes, it's pricey at $50, but it does the job as advertised. It keeps things cool and quiet!
So, in the end I did the following to build a decently quiet PC:
Antec P150 case
Enermax Liberty 500W PS
Artic Cooling Freezer 64 PRO (For an AMD Opteron 170)
1x 120mm Nexus Quiet Fan
1x 80mm Nexus Quiet Fan
Zalman VF900CU (For an eVGA 7900GT OC)
ASUS A8N-SLI Premium with no chipset fan!
