Very low WLAN bandwidth on new notebook - help!

I recently purchased a new Presario 2100 notebook to replace an old Acer and I am having major weirdnes with my WLAN. I also have a Compaq x1000. With both notebooks (x1000 and 2100) side by side, about 10 feet from my Linksys 802.11b router, I get very different transfer rates. My x1000 gets almost 3mbit/sec (thanks Comcast!) as it always has, but the new Presario can't break 900kbit/sec. The range on the Presario is also much smaller than the x1000.

I have swapped the miniPCI WLAN cards in the notebooks without any effect. I also installed a PCMCIA 802.11b card in the 2100 that used to be in the Acer, to no effect. The Acer, by the way, gets the same transfer rate as my x1000 when coupled with the PCMCIA card.

I am runing WinXP SP2 RC2 on both new notebooks. What could be causing the probelms with the new laptop?

Thanks!
