Very low volume when watching direct tv

I bought a new TV recently and the first thing I did was connect everything via HDMI cables. This includes Direct TV receiver, PS3 and XBOX3.

So everything appears to sound ok, except direct tv receiver. For comparison I can hear game sounds just fine on PS3 at volume 20, yet direct tv volume sounds kinda low even at 40. This makes hearing speech rather difficult when there are other sounds in the house.

I honestly don't even know where to start looking. To the best of my knowledge the DTV receiver doesn't have any specific custom control.

What DTV receiver do you have? I had the HD DVR, and it had a couple options for sound in the settings menu, like Dolby Digital and stereo. Also, are you connecting it to a receiver with speakers, or are both the sound and the video going directly to the TV? My DTV DVR had comparable sound levels to my PS3, and the sound was sent via digital coax to my receiver.

Everything is connecting to the TV via HDMI cables and I'm using TV speakers for everything. The receiver I use is the HD DVR, don't remember the model but it's the black glossy one. AFAIK, the only sound option I see is Dolby Digital vs Stereo. Both appear to have the same problem.

Some receivers offer a volume adjustment on a per-input basis. Most channels on my DVR are at a lower volume than my PS3, I think that's just how it is.

There are 2 black HDDVR receivers, the HR21 & HR22. I've never seen the HR22, but I'm pretty sure it's basically the same as the HR21, but the drive is larger. Since you say it happens when it is set to either stereo or DD, I'll ask this:

Did you try using the HDMI cable & input that either the PS3 or 360 are using? Since they both work, this would be the quickest way the rule out the DVR. If you still have the issue after changing both the HDMI input & the cable, then I'd say that you have a bad receiver, and you need to replace it.

If the problem goes away on the new input & cable, then I'd try the original HDMI cable in the new HDMI input the DVR is now plugged into. If the problem returns, then you know you have a bad HDMI cable. If the problem is still gone, then you may have a bad HDMI input on your tv.

nakedfrog has a point though. My PS3 is also louder than my DVR. On my Samsung, the PS3 is fine at 20, but the DVR is on 25 most of the time.
