Very low 3DMark06 scores on overclocked Optie 146

Update: MB BIOS settings increased 3DMark score to 1277. See post below for timings. Do you see anything else I can tweak?

I just upgraded my kids rig:

Optie 146 at 2.7Ghz
Asrock 939Dual SATA-2
1.5GB RAM
250GB WD SATA HD
Geforce 6800

3DMark06 score is only 668 at default settings and the Zoo Tycoon 2 Marine Mania software we just loaded runs like molasses.

My P4 2.4B, 1GB RAM, Geforce 6800 scores higher in 3DMark06 - 805

I must have some settings in the BIOS off or perhaps a missing driver?

Anyone have any ideas?

GPU, you only have a 6800. 3DMark06 will not score very high with that card at all.

1.5GB RAM, I assume you have 4 sticks then? The system can actually be faster with just 1GB with 2 sticks. The s939 chips had a problem with 4 sticks of RAM, it would lower the speed from DDR400 to DDR333 and sometimes change the command rate from 1T to 2T (slower).

I am not sure why you say that.

This guy has the same setup with and he has got 1453. That may not be high. But, relatively speaking, it is much higher than 668.

John,

Did you completely clean the previous drivers before installing the new ones?

Install ATITool (version beta 15) to check on your clocks and GPU temperature.

Yup, brand new instl of Win XP.

I have 3 sticks of 512mb. It's a long story..... I'll try taking one out and see if running the 2 sticks dual channel is faster than the 3 sticks in single channel.

AMD does not throttle in case of heat - I'm sure you know this. 🙂

O/C the gpu though can cause weird stuff to happen. My X1900XTX has a minds of its own. It will artifact in a game immediately, quit the game and restart it and it's fine. Never been o/c. Yeah for ATi "quality". :disgust:

I wish I didn't have to give it back to the kind person that gave it to me when he gives me a 8800GTX. I'd love to feed it to the fishies.

I don't know whom you are talking to!
I was referring to his graphics card.

There is a lot he can do to isolate the problem.
To start with, he can confirm that his graphics card is running at the expected frequencies.

he can compare his 3DMark06 broken down results with those on the 3DMark benchmark database to see whether it is his CPU score that is too low or his graphics card.

Just step down to 05 or 03. 01 is basically a CPU/mem test nowadays. 😛

The graphics clock should be ok and if there's a power problem on the 6800's usually the driver will sound an alarm. NV Sentinel I believe it's called.

LOL

Here are a few benchmark results if you can tell anything from them:

Opteron 146 @ 2.7Ghz, 1.5GB RAM, Geforce 6800
N-Bench V3 - 3446 (3091 CPU, 3841 3D)
3DMark03 - 9434
3DMark06 - 668

CPUZ shows:
CPU
Core Speed 2700.5MHz
Multiplier x 10.0
Bus Speed 270 MHz
HT Link 1080.2 MHz

RAM
Frequency 180.0 MHz
FSB DRAM CPU/15
CAS# Latency 2.5
RAS# to CAS# Delay 3
RAS# Precharge 3
Cycle Time 8
Command Rate 2T
DRAM Idle Timer 16 clocks

Geforce 6800 Timings from Power Strip
Engine Clock 325MHz
Memory Clock 700MHz

P4 2.4b, 1GB RAM, Geforce 6800
N-Bench V3 - 1624 (1448 CPU, 1799 3D)
3DMark03 - 8671
3DMark06 - 805

The N-Bench results make sense and seem to be right on for an overclocked Opt 146, the 3DMark06 results make no sense though. Any thoughts?

Oooops, I had some setting in the MB BIOS messed up, corrected them and 3DMark06 score double to 1277. Should still be higher though eh?

As I mentioned before, you can figure out if it is the CPU or the graphics card if you look at the broken down score list after running 3DMark06. It gives you two graphics card scores and 1 CPU score. The total, which I assume is what you keep posting, is the sum of the three.
You can also see it for the case I linked and compare it to yours.
